Hepatitis B and C Viruses Linked to Increased Risk of Common Blood Cancer, Study Suggests

Hepatitis B and C are viral infections known to impact the liver, leading to severe complications such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer. However, a recent study has uncovered a potential link between these viruses and the elevated risk of developing a common blood cancer known as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer originating in white blood cells, crucial components of the immune system. This cancer can be broadly categorized into two main types: B-cell lymphomas and T-cell lymphomas, with B-cell lymphomas representing about 85% of all NHL cases.

The study, published in the journal Blood Advances, examined data from over 1.3 million individuals tested for hepatitis B and C between 1997 and 2018 in Taiwan. By comparing the incidence of NHL among those testing positive, and negative, and those not tested for the viruses, researchers found a connection between hepatitis B and C viruses and B-cell lymphomas.

Results indicated that individuals testing positive for hepatitis B or C faced a higher risk of developing B-cell lymphomas compared to those testing negative or not tested. This risk was particularly pronounced for specific B-cell lymphoma types, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma, and follicular lymphoma. The study estimated that hepatitis B and C viruses accounted for around 14% of all B-cell lymphomas in Taiwan.

Additionally, the research highlighted that individual receiving antiviral treatment for hepatitis B or C exhibited a lower risk of developing B-cell lymphomas compared to those without treatment. This suggests that antiviral therapy could potentially aid in preventing or delaying the onset of blood cancer in individuals with chronic viral infections.

The study's conclusion emphasized the crucial role of hepatitis B and C viruses as risk factors for B-cell lymphomas. Screening and treatment for these viral infections were proposed as potential measures to reduce the burden of blood cancer in the population. The researchers called for further studies to explore the mechanisms through which these viruses contribute to lymphoma and to identify potential biomarkers for early detection and prevention.
